This book lives up to its title in every way. You’ll find detailed instructions on how to do your challenging job, as well as reasoned judgment on why Mr. Davis’s recommendations are the way to go. Here are characteristics of the sales culture that you’ll build when you follow this guide:

  • Formality
  •  Thoroughness
  • Performance-based
  • Mentorship
  • Coaching
  • Preparation
  • Developmental

These qualities, therefore, make the book conducive to a vigorous, thriving sales culture, especially the emphasis on the Sales Manager as Leader and Developmental Coach. Sales teams thrive in a collaborative, coaching culture, not a bureaucratic top-down culture. But few sales managers have much training or experience in how to behave as a coach. This book shows you how to fulfill that role and offers lots of anecdotes along the way.

I have just finished reading ‘Guide to Greatness.’ It’s a fantastic read that provides so many helpful ideas. I have just starting doing the observation forms, rolling out the success profile and now the hard work starts, in coaching our current sales people to work towards a buying focused sales cycle.

A New Perspective

The book brings everything we SHOULD do in our daily sales leadership jobs into precise focus. It’s an easy read…the concepts are clear and I’ve found it simple to implement pieces of the strategy immediately. The author understands the world we live in…the mountain of emails, the endless phone calls, the travel, the meetings…and he does a great job of isolating practical and useful strategies to achieve greatness. At the end of the book, I found myself reevaluating my primary objective with my team. The book helped me understand how to go way beyond assisting them to close more business. Now I think about ways to help them perfect their own craft and achieve their own greatness. Once we get there, the rest takes care of itself. This is a must read for anyone wanting to improve their sales leadership skills.

This is one of the most practical sales management books I’ve ever read

This is one of the most practical sales management books I’ve ever read. In the beginning, there’s a real emphasis on mindset – which often gets lost in the daily hustle and bustle of sales. From there, it delves into defining the “skills & wills” you want for your sales team (another critical element of team-building that often gets overlooked). In subsequent chapters, there are step-by-step processes to follow for inserting the buyer into your sales process, coaching/mentoring, and increasing win rates. It’s all written in very clear, concise language that makes it easy to digest (and review on a regular basis). We’ve begun implementing these strategies at our organization, and you can feel how game-changing these will be.

Great Book – Really Hits Home!

I bought the audio version first and then the hardcopy so I could better understand the charts referenced in the audio. I can honestly say that I have truly enjoyed the book and have found it to be a perfect fit for me. At some points, it almost felt as if the book was written for me. I think the part that hit home the most was the MONKEYS! I was taking everybody’s monkeys which in turn kept me from doing my job until everybody left for the day…basically I started my tasks at 5pm each day. I also like the parts about the success profile and buying focused model. I am currently working on implementing these ideas and others into my organization.

Best Sales Manager’s Book Out There

When I was recently promoted to division president at a Fortune 250 company I wanted to hone my skills and understanding of what makes an effective sales manager. I listened to three different audiobooks, but the only one I felt good enough about recommending to my sales management team was “The Sales Manager’s Guide to Greatness.”

The sales manager position is such a critical role and one that we need to shift the focus from being “the person who writes the big orders and takes things off the plate of our Account Managers” to a coaching/teaching/strategic/accountability-focused role. This book shows your organization how to make this shift. I highly recommend this book for all sales team leaders who are striving to get better.

“This really is an excellent piece of work. I like very much the way Kevin has created a one step at a time plan, guiding both novice and experienced sales managers alike, through a program of self-improvement. This ensures that managers are not overwhelmed by attempting to implement too much, too quickly. This should be a must read for all managers who have an ambition to develop into genuine leaders.”
